OIL MATERIALS LIST


EASEL:  portable, light weight, sturdy easel


PALETTE:  12 x 16 palette or large enough to mix paints


OIL PAINTS:  convenience colours you like plus a warm and a cool of each of the three primary colours ie:

            Cadmium Yellow Medium or Indian Yellow

Cadmium Yellow Light or Lemon Yellow

Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Violet

Cadmium Red Light or Cadmium Scarlett

            French Ultramarine Blue  

            Pthalo Blue or Cerulean Blue

            Titanium White (Large)

            Ivory Black

Note:  In addition please check your teacher’s paint recommendations etc.

 CANVAS OR CANVAS PAPER & BOARD

Smaller canvas panels (8x10, 9x12) for more learning experience gained by doing two small panels in a three hour window rather than one 11x14 or 12x16 or 16x20.  Smaller panels gives you two opportunities to get enough information before the light changes etc.  You will need at least 2 new canvas per day depending on the size or canvas paper and board can also be used

Note: Curry’s Art Store or Michaels carry great canvas which are well priced and good quality

Note:  If you are using a wooden canvas please prepare your canvas prior to class with Gesso etc.

OIL BRUSHES:  

Good condition Natural bristle brushes and bigger is better:

Flats or Brights #8, #10, #12

Filberts and Rounds in smaller sizes #6, #4, #2  

Note:  Curries Art Store carries Currie brand brushes which are good and economically priced.

SKETCH BOOKS AND SOFT PENCIL (2B, 4B + 6B):

Sketch Book:  8x11 sketch book

Sharpies pens (fine), charcoal, a sharpener, kneaded eraser & ruler

STUDIO REFERENCE MATERIAL :  Bring a selection of reference photos.  The larger the size and variety of subjects the better.  Have at least a dozen to choose from.

OTHER ART MATERIALS AND MISCELLANEOUS:

Palette Knife 2” diamond shaped blade, bent handle

Masking tape

Paper towels and or rags

Non toxic odorless solvent for oil

Sealable liquid container (jar to hold solvent you are using)

Plastic bag to collect your garbage

Stretch and Seal or Saran Wrap to wrap brushes and cover palette each day

Light weight bag or back pack to carry your equipment and lunch etc.

            Sun hat, sun screen, bug spray

Light weight, portable chair/stool (can be used to set palette on or if you prefer to sit and paint)

Lunch, snacks & water for drinking

Wear neutral colours, comfortable tops with long sleeves and light pants with sox and shoes

Baby wipes to clean your hands before lunch
